Characteristics of abuse normally fall under three broad categories:
Emotional/Psychological
Physical
Sexual

1. Emotional/Psychological Abuse
-Put-downs -Public humiliation -Yelling, screaming, cursing
-Blaming their partner for their own mistakes
-Jealously -Stalking -Forbidding to see family or friends
-Minimizing their partner’s feelings or thoughts
-Smashing objects in anger in front of their partner 
-Threatening to hurt their partner or partner’s loved ones
-Threatening or manipulating their partner with hurting themselves

2. Physical Abuse
-Punching – Choking -Slapping -Hitting with objects
-Whipping -Shoving -Scratching -Burning -Unwanted restraining   

3. Sexual Abuse
-Unwanted touching, kissing, or nudity
-Gaining sexual intimacy through threats or manipulation
-Gaining sexual intimacy through anger or coercion
-Any sexual act (including kissing) that takes place between a minor or adult  
-Exposing oneself without consent -Exposing another without consent
-Gaining sexual intimacy with an intoxicated individual
